Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
I'm going to pickup a shotgun this weekend, and don't know which one would be the better of the two. I've heard both are great shotguns.
Anybody own one of the two or BOTH? |
Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
Both are quality shotguns but I would much prefer the Remington 870, it will hold its value more than the Mossy will just because it is the standard bearer of shotguns. You really cant wrong with either one though.

Get a Saiga 12 Semi-Auto instead.

Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
If you like noisy, rattily action.
Go with the Moss 500. However, if you like tight precision and quieter action. Definitely the 870! Maranatha, P.S. They both shoot well. |
Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
I like my 870 better. If I were to do it again I would order the Remington rather than buy the Moss off the shelf.

Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
Remington Home Defense Model is good.
I like the safty better on the Mossberg---Much better! Its just me maybe, I like seeing all working parts without rolling it over. I hate to admit this but I have forgotten to put the safty back into a safe position with the Remington enough times it freaks me out. Mossberg has the safty right on top---superior in my opinion. Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
I bought a cheapo Maverick 20 gage pump last week.
Super lightweight, short barrel, screw in chokes, mild recoil. I like it better than any of my 12 gage pumps for a sidekick go anywhere gun. |

If there are Big 5 sporting goods stores in your area, check the weekly specials. In my area (CA) they have the Mossberg "Security" 12 ga for $239 thru Sunday. I think it's the 500 model; can anyone confirm?

Good point on the safety. The Mossberg is right on top where you can hit it with your thumb in the dark ( "Forward to Fire" ), whereas the 870 is down on the trigger guard ( Hmmm....now is it with the button to the left or right to fire ??? )......in a defense situation, you'll appreciate the Mossberg a WHOLE lot more......which is why that is my homeland defense shotgun and the 870 is my duck gun. |
Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
looks like I'll snatch up a 870:bull-buddy-icon:
Thanks to all who shared info! |

TA that is a 10 round mag I believe. I know there are 20 round drums available for them, might even be 30 round drums.
Talk about true stopping power. Could easily stop a couple dozen zombies with a Saiga 12. |

Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
I noticed Academy doesnt have the regular 870, just the 870 express.
hmmm..... what to do what to do.... I want one that can use various size shells. |
Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
Been reading a lot about semiauto shotgun reliability with various ammo loads, and the fact that most "defensive" semis need high power ammo to function reliably. The shorter the barrel, the more important this is, for obvious reasons.
No such probs with 870. |

Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
Remington 870 is what I own. I wen through the same process before settling.
I bought the model that comes with two barrels, one for buckshot the other for slugs. http://www.remington.com/products/fi...gnum_combo.asp |
Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
The 870 is the most popular shotgun in the country.
The 500 is the 2nd most popular. The are both solid, dependable guns. I prefer the Mossberg because I prefer the position of the safety (on the tang where it belongs) and the position of the slide release. |
Re: Torn between the Rem870 or the Moss500
I am now the proud owner of the Remington 870 with 26" Barrel :D
Looks like a well made piece. I am happy. Next up is an EOTECH red- dot holosight for my DPMS |
